Collective Buying Power
Wednesday, March 3, 2010 11:35 by julianneCombining the words group and coupon, Groupon is the epitome of collective buying power. It is the latest deal-of-the-day website available for certain cities in the U.S. Everyday, they feature something cool to do at an amazing discount. This can include discounted hotel stays, gym memberships, a restaurant meal, etc. The only catch of the promotion is that you only get the discount if enough people sign up for it too. The deal is put up at the beginning of the day and is left up for 24 hours. There’s a meter at the deal’s page letting users know how many people are needed for the discount to take effect. Users are encouraged to share it with as many people as possible so that enough buy it to make the deal go through. If a deal doesn’t attract the minimum number of people, there is no sale. If enough people sign up for the deal to go through, a cap is placed for the number of people who can receive the offer. So you have to act quickly. Groupon involves the community and is good exposure for new businesses.
